Adeus! És muito cara para que eu te tenha,
E bem conheces o teu próprio valor:
O privilégio de teu peso te liberta;
Minha devoção a ti é toda determinada.
Como posso ter-te, senão por teu favor?
E, diante de tanta riqueza, que fiz por merecê-la?
A causa do presente que me é dado é meu desejo,
E, assim, meu direito me é subtraído.
Tu mesma marcaste teu valor sem o saber,
Ou a mim, a quem o deste, por engano;
Pois tua grande dádiva, de mim arrancada,
Retorna à tua casa, melhor considerada.
Assim, tive a ti, como um sonho demasiado:
Um rei ao dormir e, ao despertar, um exilado.

Farewell! thou art too dear for my possessing,
And like enough thou know’st thy estimate:
The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
My bonds in thee are all determinate.
For how do I hold thee but by thy granting?
And for that riches where is my deserving?
The cause of this fair gift in me is wanting,
And so my patent back again is swerving.
Thyself thou gavest, thy own worth then not knowing,
Or me, to whom thou gavest it, else mistaking;
So thy great gift, upon misprision growing,
Comes home again, on better judgment making.
Thus have I had thee, as a dream doth flatter,
In sleep a king, but waking no such matter.
