A esticomítia é a coincidência entre um verso de uma estrofe e uma frase ou período sintático, isto é, o fenômeno que se dá quando coincidem versos e orações (uma linha poética é uma frase), fazendo aumentar a naturalidade da recitação.
Por exemplo, em Hamlet:
Rainha. Hamlet, tu ofendeste muito teu pai.
Hamlet. Mãe, vós ofendestes muito meu pai.
Rainha. Vamos, vamos, respondeis com língua louca.
Hamlet. Ide, ide, vós interrogais com língua má.
QUEEN. Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended.
HAM. Mother, you have my father much offended.
QUEEN. Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue.
HAM. Go, go, you question with a wicked tongue.
